It's time of the WWII and the persecution of Jews in Zagreb. Vojnovic sr. saves the girl (Dušica Žegarac) from the concentration camp though a marriage to his son Ivo (Boris Dvornik). Although in an arranged marriage, the two young people fall in love. When in spite of everything Ruth gets taken away, Ivo tries to save her, but they both die in the concentration camp, in the 9th circle, where there is no way out.
