II. jewish film festival london - zagreb 2008.
The Jewish Film Festival (the JFF) was for the first time organized in Croatia in 2007, under license and in cooperation with the UK Jewish Film Festival, which was inaugurated in 1997 and has since been held, in various forms, in London, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow and many other cities throughout UK.
The JFF in Croatia was initiated with a desire to promote the Jewish culture and way of life and encourage multicultural dialogue with the wider community. In addition, we wanted to give wider audiences an opportunity to see some of the remarkable and innovative film achievements with Jewish subject matter.
In 2007 during the 3 days of the festival in Zagreb over 2000 visitors attended the screenings of 11 films of different genres (selected in collaboration with the UK JFF, which apart from their expert advice also offered their practical support). The films addressed issues of Jewish culture, language and history and the position of the Jewish population in society today. Since the JFF is the first festival of its kind in the region, the results of its first edition even surpassed the initial expectations.
In 2008 the JFF will last for 5 days, from 11 till 15 June, which is 2 days longer compared to last year. During the 5 days more than 20 films from Croatia and abroad will be screened. The ample side program of the festival will include two round tables, one of which will be devoted to the issue of refugees and organized in cooperation with UNHCR. We are also preparing several concerts, an exhibition of photographs and educational programs.
